Waste Disposal Technician
A waste disposal technician handles the practical side of getting waste safely collected, sorted, treated and sent to the right destination - landfill, incineration with energy recovery, recycling or specialist treatment. The work sits with local authorities, private waste and recycling companies, hazardous waste contractors, and in-house teams at hospitals, universities, labs and manufacturing sites. Much of the job is about following legal duty-of-care rules for waste: identifying what a waste stream actually is, classifying it correctly, keeping the paperwork right, and making sure nothing hazardous ends up somewhere it shouldn't.
What you'd actually do
- Identifying and classifying waste - working out whether a drum, skip or bagged stream is hazardous or non-hazardous, checking labels and safety data sheets (the standard documents describing a chemical's hazards), and assigning the right waste code so it goes to a permitted destination
