Sustainability Carbon Research Contract Month

This is a short, fixed-term research job (the "contract month" wording in the advert title signals temporary, month-to-month or short-contract work) focused on measuring and analysing carbon emissions and wider sustainability data. The person gathers emissions and energy data, works it up into carbon footprint calculations, and writes it up for an employer, a client organisation, or a research or consultancy team. The work usually feeds into a carbon footprint report, a net zero plan, a sustainability disclosure, or an academic or policy research output.

Approximate graduate salary

For short-term and entry-level carbon or sustainability research contracts, pay is typically somewhere around £24,000–£32,000 a year or the pro-rata or day-rate equivalent, though this varies widely - London and private-sector consultancy tend to sit at or above the top of that range, while university research assistant posts and charity contracts often sit lower. Treat this as a rough guide only.

What you'd actually do

  • Chasing and cleaning data - collecting utility bills, fuel records, travel logs, purchasing spreadsheets and supplier information from different departments or clients, then tidying inconsistent formats into something usable
  • Running carbon calculations in Excel: multiplying activity data (kWh of electricity, litres of diesel, tonnes of material purchased) by published emission factors to produce greenhouse gas figures, and documenting the assumptions behind each one
  • Desk research - reading standards, government guidance, academic papers and industry reports on a specific sector, technology or emissions source, and summarising the findings
  • Building or updating a carbon inventory or model, usually in a spreadsheet, sometimes in specialist carbon accounting or life cycle assessment software

  • Writing up findings: charts, short technical notes, sections of a longer report, or slides that a manager or consultant will present to a client
  • Checking other people's numbers - cross-referencing figures against source documents and flagging gaps, double-counting or implausible results
  • Attending internal catch-ups and occasionally joining client or stakeholder calls to ask follow-up questions about missing data

How graduates get in

  • Direct application to short-term or fixed-term research contracts advertised by sustainability consultancies, engineering and built environment firms, charities, universities and public sector bodies - this is the most common route into work advertised this way, and such contracts are often filled quickly and at short notice
  • Graduate schemes at sustainability, engineering or management consultancies, where carbon footprinting work is one rotation or workstream - more structured but much more competitive, and usually with annual autumn deadlines
  • University research assistant posts attached to a funded project on decarbonisation, often open to recent graduates and sometimes a stepping stone into a PhD
  • Internships or placements with a sustainability team during or just after a degree, which frequently convert into short research contracts

  • Conversion via a master's in environmental science, carbon management, sustainability, energy or environmental engineering - common for graduates from unrelated first degrees, though not required
  • Temp and contract agencies that supply ESG and sustainability staff to larger companies, particularly around reporting deadlines when teams need extra hands

What employers ask for

  • A degree in a numerate or environmental subject is the usual expectation - environmental science, geography, earth sciences, engineering, chemistry, physics, economics, data science. Subject matters more here than in general graduate recruitment, but a strong numerate graduate from another discipline with demonstrable carbon or energy interest is often considered
  • Typically a 2:1, though for short contracts employers often weigh practical data skills and availability at least as heavily as classification
  • Genuine Excel competence - not just familiarity, but comfort with lookups, pivot tables and building a calculation that someone else can audit
  • Some evidence of applied sustainability work: a dissertation on emissions or energy, a volunteering or society role, a placement, or a personal project calculating a footprint
Show 3 more
  • A master's is common but not a formal requirement; it matters more for research-institute and policy-facing posts than for consultancy data work
  • Knowledge of the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (the main international standard for corporate carbon accounting, which splits emissions into Scope 1 direct, Scope 2 purchased energy and Scope 3 value chain) is often listed as desirable - you can learn the basics before applying
  • Availability to start quickly matters disproportionately for short contract roles

Skills that matter

Spreadsheet modelling and data cleaning

Most carbon work is Excel work, and the bulk of the time goes on making messy data from different sources consistent enough to calculate with.

Understanding emission factors and units

You will constantly convert between kWh, litres, tonnes and kgCO2e, and picking the wrong factor or unit silently invalidates the whole result.

Documenting assumptions and methodology

Carbon figures get challenged, audited or reused months later, so a calculation nobody can trace back to its source is worthless.

Technical writing for non-technical readers

The output is usually a report section or slide read by a facilities manager or finance director who needs the conclusion, not the maths.

Persistence in chasing information

A large part of the job is politely asking busy people for the fifth time for the invoice data you cannot calculate without.

Fast self-directed learning

On a short contract you may be handed an unfamiliar sector or standard and expected to be productive within days rather than months.

Putting these on a CV? We counted which skills 12,914 live graduate adverts ask for, and what to do with the answer — part of our application advice.

Where it leads

  1. Complete the contract and have it extended or rolled into a longer fixed-term or permanent post - this is a common outcome where the employer has ongoing reporting needs, but it is not guaranteed and you should plan for it not happening

  2. Move into a permanent sustainability analyst, carbon analyst or ESG analyst role, either with the same organisation or using the contract as the practical experience that unlocks applications elsewhere

  3. Progress to consultant or senior analyst, owning client relationships and whole projects rather than individual calculations - typically a few years in, though timelines vary widely and short-contract careers can be slower or faster depending on continuity of work

  4. Specialise - into life cycle assessment, Scope 3 and supply chain emissions, energy modelling, climate risk, or sustainability reporting and assurance - and pursue professional recognition such as membership of a relevant environmental professional body or Chartered Environmentalist status

  5. Longer term, routes split: sustainability manager or head of sustainability inside a company, principal consultant in an advisory firm, policy or analyst roles in government and NGOs, or back into academic research via a PhD

What people get wrong

“It is outdoors, hands-on environmental work.”

It is almost entirely desk-based data and document work. You are far more likely to be reconciling twelve months of gas bills than visiting a site, though occasional site visits to understand operations do happen in consultancy.

“A short contract is a lesser version of a graduate scheme and looks weak on a CV.”

In sustainability, short research and reporting contracts are a normal and well-understood entry route, partly because corporate reporting deadlines create seasonal demand. Employers in the sector read them as relevant experience, not as instability - several short contracts stacked together is a recognised path into a permanent analyst role.

“You need to be passionate about climate change and that passion is what gets you hired.”

Motivation is assumed; what actually distinguishes candidates is whether they can handle incomplete, inconsistent data without producing nonsense. The job is closer to accounting than to campaigning.

“Carbon figures are precise scientific measurements.”

Most corporate carbon numbers are estimates built on published average factors, proxy data and stated assumptions. Much of the skill lies in choosing defensible assumptions and being transparent about uncertainty, not in getting an exact answer.

Where this varies

The same job title covers quite different work depending on the employer. In a consultancy you will work across several clients at once, to tight deadlines, with a strong focus on billable output and client-ready reports. In an in-house corporate sustainability team you work on one organisation's footprint in much more depth, often tied to an annual reporting cycle. In a university or research institute the emphasis shifts towards literature review, methodology and publishable analysis rather than client deliverables, and in the public or charity sector it leans towards policy-relevant evidence. The "contract month" framing also varies in practice: some such posts are genuinely a month of cover during a reporting crunch, others are rolling monthly contracts that continue for a year or more, and others are agency placements. It is worth asking at interview which it is, and whether there is any realistic route to extension or a permanent post.
