Postdoctoral Fellow

A postdoctoral fellow (usually shortened to "postdoc") is a researcher employed by a university or research institute after finishing a PhD, working on a specific research project for a fixed period - commonly two to three years, though it varies. They design and run experiments, studies or analyses, write up results as academic papers, and are typically part of a research group led by a senior academic (the principal investigator, or "PI"), while also helping supervise PhD and undergraduate students. It is not a graduate-entry job: a completed or near-complete PhD is the baseline requirement, so this is a role you reach several years after your first degree.

Approximate graduate salary

UK postdoc salaries are usually set by national university pay scales rather than negotiated individually, and typically start somewhere in the region of approximately GBP 36,000-45,000, with London posts higher because of London weighting. This is approximate and varies by institution, funder, sector (research institutes and industry-funded posts can differ) and experience level.

What you'd actually do

  • Running the actual research - this looks completely different by field: lab experiments and sample preparation in the life sciences, writing and debugging code or running simulations in computational fields, fieldwork or interviews in social sciences, archival and close reading work in the humanities.
  • Analysing data and results, often in R, Python, MATLAB, Stata or specialist software, and deciding what the results mean and what to do next.
  • Writing - drafting papers for academic journals, revising them in response to peer reviewers' criticisms (which can take months), and writing sections of grant applications for future funding.
  • Meeting the principal investigator who leads the group, usually weekly or fortnightly, to report progress and agree priorities; attending group meetings where members present work in progress.
  • Supervising and troubleshooting for PhD students, master's students and technicians - showing them techniques, reading their drafts, answering questions when an experiment fails.
  • Presenting at conferences, seminars and internal talks, and reading the recent literature to keep up with what competing groups are publishing.
  • Administrative work that surrounds research: ordering supplies, ethics applications, safety paperwork, data management plans, and reporting to funders on how grant money has been spent.

How graduates get in

  • The standard route: undergraduate degree, then a PhD (typically three to four years full-time in the UK, often longer in practice), then applying for advertised postdoc positions. There is no shortcut around the PhD - it is effectively a hard requirement.
  • Applying to posts funded by an existing grant. Most postdoc jobs are advertised because a principal investigator has won funding for a defined project and needs someone to do the work. These are advertised on university job pages and academic job boards, and hiring is often quicker and less formalised than a corporate graduate scheme.
  • Winning your own fellowship. Research councils, charities and some universities fund independent early-career fellowships where you write your own research proposal and, if successful, bring the money with you. These are considerably more prestigious and more competitive than grant-funded posts, and usually give more independence.
  • Staying on with your PhD group or department. Common in practice, though many supervisors and hiring panels prefer you to move institution to broaden your experience and network.
  • Moving in from industry or clinical practice. Medics, vets, engineers and others sometimes do a PhD mid-career and then take a postdoc, often part-time alongside clinical work. Clinical academic routes have their own structures.
  • Coming from abroad, or going abroad. UK postdoc positions are internationally advertised and international mobility is normal in this career - many UK-trained researchers do a postdoc overseas and vice versa.

What employers ask for

  • A PhD in a relevant field, either awarded or with submission imminent. Some posts are advertised as "post-doctoral research associate" and will let you start once you have submitted your thesis; pay may be held at a lower point until the degree is formally awarded. The specific subject matters enormously here - unlike graduate schemes, the discipline and even the sub-field is usually specified tightly.
  • Publications. Hiring panels look at what you have published or have under review from your PhD. How much matters varies hugely by field - in some lab sciences a first-author paper in a good journal counts for a lot; in some humanities fields a monograph plan or a small number of articles is normal.
  • Specific technical methods. Adverts commonly name techniques the group needs - a particular imaging method, cell culture, a statistical approach, a programming language, a language for archival work. Meeting these named requirements matters more than general academic ability.
  • Undergraduate grades are rarely the deciding factor by this stage, though a good honours degree (typically 2:1 or above) and often a master's are what got you onto the PhD in the first place.
  • Funding and visa status. Posts are almost always fixed-term and tied to a grant. Universities are licensed visa sponsors, so international candidates are commonly hired, but eligibility rules differ between posts and fellowship schemes.
  • For independent fellowships, a written research proposal and evidence you can work independently - these applications are long, and often require a host department to agree to support you before you apply.

Skills that matter

Academic writing under peer review

Your output is measured largely in published papers, and getting a paper through reviewers means writing clearly, anticipating objections and rewriting patiently.

Experimental or research design

You are usually given an aim rather than a protocol, so you decide what to measure, what the controls are and what would count as a convincing result.

Data analysis and statistics (or the equivalent methods in your field)

Interpreting messy real data correctly - and knowing when a result is noise - is the core judgement the job tests.

Working independently with unclear feedback

A supervisor may see you briefly each week, experiments fail for weeks at a time, and nobody tells you day to day whether you are on track.

Grant and proposal writing

Your next post, and often your current group's survival, depends on money being won, so postdocs increasingly draft or co-write funding applications.

Supervising and explaining

You are the person PhD students actually ask for help, so being able to teach a technique or diagnose someone else's failed experiment is a large part of the week.

Managing collaborators and shared resources

Projects usually span several people and institutions, and progress often depends on chasing samples, data or code from someone who has other priorities.

Where it leads

  1. A first postdoc contract, usually fixed-term. Many researchers then take a second and sometimes third postdoc, often at a different institution or in a different country, building a publication record and a distinctive research direction.

  2. An independent fellowship, where you hold your own funding and start to define your own research programme rather than delivering someone else's. This is the usual bridge to a permanent academic post in many fields.

  3. A lectureship or equivalent permanent academic post, combining research, teaching and administration, then progression to senior lecturer, reader and professor. Timescales vary enormously and there is no guaranteed progression - permanent posts are far fewer than the number of postdocs, and many capable researchers do not get one.

  4. Alternative research careers inside universities: core facility or technical specialist roles, research software engineering, research management, technology transfer, or staff scientist positions on longer-term contracts. These are increasingly common and are not a failure route.

  5. Moving out of academia: industrial R&D (pharma, biotech, engineering, energy), data science and quantitative analysis, scientific consultancy, publishing and editorial work, science policy, the Civil Service (including analytical and scientific fast-stream style routes), patent attorney training, or teaching. PhD and postdoc experience is well recognised by employers in these areas.

What people get wrong

It is a graduate job you can apply for after your degree.

It is not open to new graduates at all. A completed PhD is essentially always required, so realistically you are seven or more years past starting your undergraduate degree before you are eligible.

A postdoc is a stepping stone that reliably leads to a permanent lectureship.

For most people it does not. There are far more postdocs than permanent academic posts, and many researchers do several fixed-term contracts before either landing a permanent post or moving into industry, research support or another sector. Planning for both outcomes from the start is normal and sensible.

You spend your time doing pure research, free from admin and management.

A large share of the week goes on grant applications, ethics and safety paperwork, funder reporting, supervising students, ordering equipment and reviewing others' papers. Some postdocs also teach or demonstrate for extra income or experience.

Postdocs are well paid because they are highly qualified specialists.

Pay is set by university salary scales rather than by market value for your skills, and is typically comparable to a mid-level professional salary despite the qualification level. Peers who left after their PhD for industry often earn considerably more.

The work is solitary, head-down thinking.

Most postdocs work in a group and depend heavily on collaborators, technicians, students and external partners. Chasing people, negotiating access to shared kit and coordinating multi-site projects takes up real time.

Where this varies

Practice differs a lot by discipline and by employer. In lab-based sciences, postdocs are numerous, projects are group-based and hands-on bench work dominates; in the humanities, postdoc posts are fewer, often tied to a named fellowship scheme, and the work is more solitary and writing-led, sometimes with a book as the main output. Contract length varies from around one year to five. Some posts are almost entirely research; others bundle in significant teaching, particularly at teaching-intensive universities. Independent research institutes, NHS-linked clinical research and industry-funded posts have their own pay structures and expectations that can depart from standard university scales. There are also large differences in how much independence you get - some principal investigators direct the work closely, others expect you to set your own direction, and it is worth asking about this at interview.
